That territory…
That territory that brings many false sets of security…….
Ultimately you must enjoy your sowing rewards, I insist! As well as the plants you have nurtured but don’t be fooled that you have all the time in the world and can take time out. For me I simply don’t have the time in spring to sow everything so I have begun the autumn sowings of peach and vanilla toned field stocks, which popped in a matter of days. These beautiful flowers are quite costly once you cut them, that’s it. Out they come and fill the space with something else. However grow the Quartet variety and it branch, giving you creamy yellow flowers edged with a blush of rose.
Other flowers at the moment that are going in for an early sowing are Ammi Majus, Daucus Carrot, pastel lavender cornflowers and nigella. The beloved larkspur will benefit from a sowing late on in September until then they are in the freezer.
Another flower that I wouldn’t be without that have succumbed to an early autumn sowing are the many guises of snapdragons. One of my favourites this year was Snapstar pink, these cut and come again flowers really proved to be a gloriously frilly flower and went into almost every bouquet until the a deluge of rain flattened then. Once they go that is simply it, they never straighten, I have enjoyed these twisted and twirled stems on every surface in my home. Think Potomac and Chantilly, pick your palette and sow away.
A little side note…
If you have loved my annual scabious this year, pop that on your autumn sowing list, a flower that is beautiful in bud, fully open and as a seed head stage of it’s life cycle… you’ll thank me later.
Until the next time…
